Äntligen har vinerna från Dhondt-Grellet landat Äntligen har vinerna från Dhondt-Grellet landat på lagret. Stor nyhet för i år är @adriendhondt egna linje med viner. Det är ett resultat av Adriens obegränsade nyfikenhet och vilja att utforska regionen och dess potential. Som alltid lämnar han oss mållös med sin otroliga förmåga att översätta terroir till vin. 

Vi har jobbat med Adrien sen dag ett, dryga decenniet nu. Det är fascinerande att ha följt resan och de framsteg som gjorts, och imponerande att se den outtröttliga anda han besitter. Adrien är utan tvekan en av de mest revolutionerande och dynamiska vinodlarna i Champagne.

L’Enclòs de Peralba was started in 2017 by the two young cousins Leo and Roc Gramona (yes, the very same Gramona family so renowned for their sparkling wine). The project has fused the heritage from their ancestors with their contemporary and, as they say themselves, disruptive vision and ideas of winemaking. When you put it in the context of Penedès, what they are creating is disruptive indeed. A change we embrace.

Sometimes it feels like innovation is driven for the sake of change alone. It’s impressive to see how Leo and Roc first look back before moving forward, how they value the rich history and know-how that exists amongst the old growers. One of the first steps on their journey was to consult these people, as valuable and endangered as some rare old varieties. See next image for more background.

Terroir is key in the wine philosophy. Different origins, wether it be village or vineyards, is treated with the respect it demands. All vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed. Countless of hours are invested amongst the vines, this is where the wines truly are made.

Wines are very impressive and very serious. They are gentle yet intense, very focused and energetic. They combine sunny aromatics with bright freshness and unmistakable terroir and sense of place. Focus is mainly still white, some pét-nat and red.

Pioneer and master of Xarel.lo

Native Enric with a background as a sommelier (champion in Spain 1997), wine scholar and educator came in to wine making and farming with a unique approach. From the get go he treated Xarel.lo with the belief that it was capable of producing world class white wine.

First vintage was 2004 with a mere 2000 bottles. At the time it was more of a side project and little did Enric know that he would quietly start a revolution. Enric produces a minuscule amount of wine, around 10’ bottles per year and focuses solely on varietal Xarel.lo. It’s important put emphasis on this and put it into context – when Enric began making varietal Xarel.lo nobody else was doing so. It has always been a praised and important grape in the region, but always in blends. Enric has broken ground and proven that Xarel.lo is one of the great noble green grapes. Today producing some of Spains most impressive white wines.

Farming is organic and biodynamic. Wine making is lo-fi, non-technical, Enric makes wine with his palette with a Burgundian approach – both in style and concept of terroir. The resulting wines are a textural wonder with incredible refinement and mineral nerve that clearly speaks of its place.

Imorgon på tillfälliga sortimentet lanserar vi ”röd chablis”. I nordvästra Bourgogne hittar vi Irancy, hem till runt 20 odlare fördelade på ynka 160 hektar. I den här svalare delen av regionen fokuserar man på eleganta, ofta lättare, röda viner på Pinot Noir, ibland med en skvätt av den lokala César.

Familjen Cantin har odlat vin här i fem generationer, idag gör man så medvetet och ekologiskt. Benoît tog över 1994 och har successivt förfinat sina viner. Tillåt oss citera Neal Martin i Vinous:

”I first came across Benoît Cantin’s Irancy dining on my own in the Hostellerie de Chablis restaurant. Having tasted dozens of steely dry whites throughout the day, my palate was in the mood for rouge, so I ordered a bottle off the list. I enjoyed it so much that the following day I made an impromptu visit, fortunate to find Benoît inside the winery located under the family home. A stocky man with a congenial personality, Cantin farms 13.50 hectares and started bottling his own wine in 1997. His wines include an Irancy, an Irancy “Cuvée Emeline”, named after his daughter and matured in more new oak, as well as single vineyard bottlings of La Palotte and La Grand Côte. The jewel in the crown is his La Palotte. I served a 2010 blind to a group of highly critical palates during the annual Burgfest tasting. They were as deeply impressed as I was, prompting Jasper Morris MW to comment that it was the best Irancy he had ever tasted. Well, that is one thing Jasper and I agree upon”.

Peter Lauer and their wines doesn’t really need any introduction. Their legal battles with German wine law to allow them to focus on terroir and provenance of their Riesling have made them world known. For many years they were not allowed to state the specific vineyard name on the labels. Unthinkable for a lage-, or cru-, specialist of Ayl as Lauer is. Florian Lauer fought the law, and he won. Today they are once again, as was their tradition, allowed to specify vineyard name on the label. But, during the time they were wrestling it out in the court room the temporary solution in order to communicate which vineyard was in the bottle Florian Lauer coded them with barrel numbers. 

This release for instance is the ‘Faß No 9’ which translates to the vineyard of Kern, a parcel within the Grosse Lage (≈Grand Cru) of Ayler Kupp. Kern is located on the western side of the Kupp hillside. It is steep, gets sun through the majority of the day, although less in the morning and more in the afternoon. Cool winds and dry and hot slate always are typical features. This site always renders an off-dry, feinherb, style of Riesling with superb freshness, intense aromatics and strong mineral core. It’s a grand wine. And 2021 is looking utterly promising.
